3 Myths and Facts About Immunizations

Getting immunized is an effective way to protect oneself against the life-threatening diseases by enhancing the body’s natural immune response to diseases brought by bacteria and viruses. However, there are some common myths out which make some people hesitant to get immunized.

In this article, Atlantic Drugs, a renowned Prescription Pharmacy in Long Beach CA, will be tackling some common myths about immunizations along with some useful references that disprove these myths.

  • Myth #1: MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine cause autism.

Fact: Throughout the years, there have been several claims that vaccines cause autism which has led many parents to delay or outright refuse to vaccinate their children. However, many studies have found no correlation between the vaccines and Autism. One such study published on Immunization Action Coalition clearly states that there is no link between the MMR Vaccine and Autism. (

  • Myth #2: Older Adults don’t need to get immunized.

Fact: Many people believe that vaccines are only beneficial to children and once you grow older, you’ll no longer need them. This is not true. Several vaccines are designed for older adults such as the Shingles Vaccine (recommended for adults aged 60 years old and above), the two Pneumococcal Vaccines (recommended for adults aged 65 years old and above), and more. Moreover, you should continue your booster shots to protect yourself against a whooping cough (pertussis), diphtheria, tetanus, and flu.

  • Myth #3: Natural immunity is better than getting immunized.

Fact: Countless people argue that immunity gained after surviving a natural infection is much better than getting immunized. However, while natural infection usually does cause better immunity, it is also important to note that the risks of natural infection are greater. Many health complications (i.e. paralysis, brain damage, liver failure, and even death) can arise as a result of natural infection.

The Immunization Action Coalition has compiled several real‐life reports of people who have suffered or passed away due to vaccine‐preventable diseases. These reports are an important reminder why vaccines are vital to protecting oneself, your loved ones, and others.(

  • These are just three of the many myths surrounding immunizations out there today. Before you refuse getting immunized, please do your due diligence and do your research first. You can also talk to your physician or pharmacist – they can answer any and all questions that you may have about vaccines.
